FILM NIGHT “THE BRUTALIST” Thursday 23rd October at 7:30pm
Adrien Brody delivers another complex performance – conflicted, unbelonging, creative, wild inside and subdued outside. It is the story of a Hungarian Jewish architect Laszlo Toth (an imaginary composite of multiple Hungarian architects) who arrives to Ellis Island and settles in Philadelphia, escaping post WWII Europe, waiting for his wife and his niece to join him as he tries to find his footing in his new country that both takes in and is suspicious of ‘foreigners’. The beauty of this movie is its wonderful fabrication of several intertwining threads – Laszlo as an artist, architecture as a theme, perspectives of industrial money, and the people that occupy this clearly defined, compact yet sprawling landscape. The centerpiece architecture weaved into this movie (an atypical, all-concrete, brutalist community center in Doylstown, PA) is shown more in close-ups and silhouettes rather than its true size and splendor – purely claustrophobic mood, amazing cinematography and scene setting.
