Cotswold Tree Warden Group Events

 

The Cotswold Tree Warden Group comprises Tree Wardens, representing the Towns and Parishes within the Cotswold District Council area, as well as other interested parties in and adjacent to the Cotswolds It is run by a committee of volunteers.

The group organises training through both written sources and practical work to assist Tree Wardens to fulfil their role in the community.  Visits and walks are also arranged and are hopefully both a source of pleasure and informative.

They run a number of events throughout the year some of which are listed below:

Saturday 6th February 2016 Coppicing and hedgelaying

Another opportunity to experience this practical skill.  Get the satisfaction of seeing an end result like the one shown below from the course held in February 2015.

Our training day will consist of two elements.  Firstly we will undertake some coppicing to obtain supplies for use in part two, hedgelaying. Training will be undertaken by Mike Hartnell. There is a charge, payable on the day, of £5 for Tree Wardens and £10 for other attendees.  We need to arrive in time for a 10 a.m. start.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Afternoon – Hedgelaying at Ditchford, Moreton-in-Marsh

 Directions – For Whichford Wood, from Moreton-in-Marsh, take the A44 towards Chipping Norton. After 1.5 miles turn left signed for Great Wolford, 2 miles. In Great Wolford village, at the crossroads turn right for Little Wolford, proceeding through that village until you reach the A3400.  Turn right onto the A3400 towards Long Compton.  After just over 1 mile, take the left turn, Hack Lane, signed Whichford 2.5 miles.  Follow this road for 1.3 miles.  The entrance to the site is on your right and signs will be in place.
For Ditchford, take the A429 to approximately 3 miles north of Moreton-in-Marsh. Turn left at the junction at grid reference SP22143703 – marked ‘Paxford 2 1/2’. Continue for nearly one mile to the site entrance and signs will be in place.
Please note there are no toilet facilities at our morning venue.

Wednesday 2nd March 2016  Orchard Training, Barton House Orchard, Cirencester

We have re-scheduled the training which had to be cancelled in 2015.  Dave Kaspar will once again lead the session at Barton House Orchard. Our theme is “Orchards and longevity”.  After an indoor talk, we will move into the orchard for a short introduction to pruning and maintaining orchard trees for those without previous experience.  Then we propose working on an old ‘Catshead’ apple tree, as well as pruning the prolific ‘Newton’s Wonder’ apple tree to help maintain its productivity. The training event costs are subsidised by CTWG funds but there is also a £10 charge for each attendee (pay on the day).  Bring a packed lunch and wear suitable clothing, also if you have tools you think of use (secateurs, loppers, etc), please bring these too.

Thursday 14th April 2016  Joint meeting with the RFS – Illustrated talks – Geoff March entitled Scenes from an Arboricultural Consultant’s life. Barrie Wellington and Mike Hartnell will give a presentation on Trees from Nursery to Planting and Management.

DirectionsOur venue is the Council Chamber at Cotswold District Council Offices, Trinity Road, Cirencester, GL7 1PX,  which is just to the south of the town centre. It is best approached via the ring road A419, exiting at the Waitrose side of the Hospital/Waitrose roundabout, signed for ‘Town Centre’.  Take the one-way system round Hammond Way and Tetbury Road to Sheep Street.  Trinity Road is the third turning on the left.  Tea/Coffee and Cake will be available from 6.30 p.m. Talks to commence at 7.00 p.m.

 Wednesday 25th May 2016 – May Walk at Eyford Park, Upper Slaughter
